Article: Making the Switch to Natural Deodorant

Making the Switch to Natural Deodorant

I cannot count how many times people have told me, “Tamara, natural deodorant just doesn’t work for me.”

What you don’t realize is that your body goes through a detox phase when you make the switch from an aluminum-laden antiperspirant for a natural deodorant. Some people find that the first week of natural deodorant that their body odor increases. This doesn’t mean it is not working. Your natural deodorant isn’t making you smell worse – the bacterial communities under your arms are changing and it doesn’t happen overnight! It can take up to 30 days for your body to fully detox from aluminum.

Aluminium-based antiperspirants work by blocking the sweat ducts, reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the skin’s surface. When they are applied to the skin and come in contact with sweat, the aluminium salts react to precipitate out and form a plug over the sweat glands. Sweat continues to be produced by the sweat gland but it just isn't able to reach the surface of the skin

What to Expect When you make the Switch To Natural Deodorant

Medical journals show that similar to the gut or the mouth, the biology of armpit bacteria is just as complicated. This is why you need to allow at least 2 to 4 weeks to adjust to natural deodorant.
Your underarm microbiomes are about to to go through an adjustment period as  the bacteria in your underarm change.

Everyone’s personal chemistry and bacteria are different you will probably find when making the switch that :

  • Your underarms produce additional moisture because your body is sweating, which is the body’s natural way to flush out toxins

  • You will find your personal smell increases. But don’t fear that odor-causing bacteria won’t last forever, it is just a part of the detox that happens when you discontinue use of traditional deodorant.

Usually around the 30 day mark your body should have fully adjusted to natural deodorant and purged all of the aluminum from your pores. For some the detox stage is shorter. You can now continue and fully enjoy using natural deodorant every day to neutralize the smell of daily body odor.
